According to tradition, the didukh is the last sheaf of the harvest. Oats, rye, wheat, flax are its main components. The straw amulet is the spirit of ancestors, grandfathers, the preservation of traditions and family memory. It is a symbol of a good harvest, peace and harmony in the family, and prosperity in the house. The tradition of placing the didukh in the house on the porch dates back to very ancient times. In pre-Christian beliefs, he was the embodiment of the god of Christmas, a symbol of memory of ancestors.
The festive sheaf was in the house for a week (in some places even until Epiphany). Its presence brought a festive mood, comfort, and festivity to the family. The people used to say “Didukh to the house – trouble from the house”.
