According to tradition, didukh is the last sheaf of the harvest. Oats, rye, wheat, flax are its main components. A straw amulet is the spirit of ancestors, grandfathers, the preservation of traditions and family memory. It is a symbol of a good harvest, peace and harmony in the family, prosperity in the house. The tradition of placing didukh in the house on the porch dates back to very ancient times. In pre-Christian beliefs, he was the embodiment of the god Kolyada, a symbol of memory of ancestors.
The festive sheaf was in the house for a week (in some places even until Epiphany). His presence brought a festive mood, comfort and festivity to the family. The people used to say “Didukh to the house – trouble from the house”.
Our didukh is collected in classic Ukrainian technology, each spikelet by spikelet.
